Amtrak No. 1 |
Description: |
During the 1980 Christmas Season, Amtrak regularly leased Southern Pacific SD40T-2 units to assist pairs of SDP40F's on very long SUNSETS, and here is SP 8564 - along with Amtrak 511 and 518 - accelerating a westbound train out of Avondale Yard. By this time, most of the other western long-distance trains had been re-equipped with SUPERLINERS; so Amtrak was able to run 15-car SUNSETS, which was still steam heated, using some of the cars released from these other trains. Within a few months, the SUNSET itself would also receive SUPERLINERS, and it would never again operate with this many cars unless something REALLY special was going on! |

An Odd Couple |
Description: |
Missouri Pacific GP7 1761 was teamed up with Illinois Central Gulf GP10 8291 on a westbound MP transfer run near the east end of the Huey P. Long Bridge. In the early 1980's ICG GP10's would occasionally show up on MP transfer runs and yard jobs in the New Orleans area, but this combination of power was not very common. MP 1761 was retired six months after this photo was taken. |

TO&E GP35 D-22 |
Description: |
Texas Oklahoma & Eastern GP35 number D-22 was built in April 1965 as Southern Pacific 7729, then quickly renumbered SP 6626. It was wrecked in 1973 and sold to Morrison-Knudsen, who rebuilt it as Weyerhaeuser Timber 308 for use in Washington State. Around 1980 Weyerhaeuser transferred it to the Texas Oklahoma & Eastern where it was renumbered D-22, and it was shown here in the DeQueen & Eastern shop not long afterwards. It went to Mid-AMerica Car in 1990 and then became Arkansas Midland 2502. |

This anonymous Alco S3 had been built in November 1950 (serial 78507) as Pennsylvania Railroad 8876, and was later Penn Central 9476. It was photographed on the Mississippi Export at Moss Point, Mississippi, possibly owned by George R. Sillcott, a dealer in used railroad equipment, although we don't know what it was doing here. |
