L&N Last Run
Title:  L&N Last Run
Description:  This somewhat-fuzzy Instamatic shot recorded the last departure of a regularly-scheduled L&N train from New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. It was 5PM as the PAN-AMERICAN pulled out behind E8's 785 and 786, both former Frisco units purchased in 1965, with baggage car 1484, heavyweight coach 2555, lightweight coaches 3254 and 3250, lunch-counter/diner/lounge 2801, and 6-6-4 sleeper SHORT LEAF PINE, all for Cincinnati; plus coach 3255 for Jacksonville. L&N was one of few U.S. railroads that ran sleepers with open sections up until the beginning of Amtrak. The commemorative lettering on the nose and side of the 785 was added by railfan Jim Selzer of Slidell, Louisiana. The last southbound PAN-AMERICAN arrived at 11:25 the next morning behind E7A's 779 and 780, and they deadhead out later that day with all of the remaining L&N cars.

SP SDP45 3207
Title:  SP SDP45 3207
Description:  The United Transportation Union struck the UP and the Southern on 16 July 1971, and then the SP and the N&W on 24 July. Because of the strike threat against the SP, Amtrak’s SUNSET LIMITED which should have left New Orleans on Friday 23 July was annulled, and this provided a rare (at that time) opportunity to photograph a set of SUNSET power at NOUPT over that weekend. On the day the strike began, SP SDP45 3207, UP E8B 927B and UP E9A 947 were photographed on the engine service track. (The E-units were eventually renumbered Amtrak 370 and 424.) The strike was quickly ended and the SUNSET left on schedule on Monday 26 July.

Amtrak Turbo 50
Title:  Amtrak Turbo 50
Description:  Three months after Amtrak began running trains, it sent United Aircraft TURBOTRAIN set 50/51 on a nationwide tour to show Americans what the future of passenger travel would look like. Things didn't quite work out the way Amtrak showed us, but here was Paul Oliver in font of power car 50 while the train was on display at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The gold stripes on the train were actually black SCOTCHLITE, and the young woman on the left was wearing a purple SMILE A WHILE ON THE TURBOTRAIN sticker. The train had just arrived on the Southern Railway and left two days later on the Southern Pacific, and several of us got to ride it to Lafayette. Illinois Central coach 2504 had been built in October 1946 as Chicago & Eastern Illinois 463 VERMILLION TRAIL and was purchased by the IC in 1961.

Carrollton Avenue Station
Title:  Carrollton Avenue Station
Description:  This image at the former Carrollton Avenue Station in New Orleans was looking north across the South Carrollton Avenue Underpass towards Carrollton Junction, where New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal’s EASTERN and WESTERN connections diverged to the right and left. The photo was taken as the remaining platform shelter was being dismantled. The station originally had two platforms serving three tracks and was first used when NOUPT opened in 1954. The third track, which had been on the left, was removed about a year earlier, and use of the station ended when Amtrak began on 1 May 1971 or shortly thereafter.

Title:  L&N FP7 666
Description:  Louisville & Nasville locomotives stopped visiting the diesel shop at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on a regular basis with the advent of Amtrak on 1 May 1971; but the railroad continued to send power to NOUPT every now and then. Here we see FP7 666 sticking out of the NOUPT shop, one year after the beginning of Amtrak. The unit was retired about a year and a half later, in November 1973. (approximate month and day)

The open hood doors on the first two units were a common sight on early U-boats, as their door latches didn't work very well after a while. MP F7A 921
Title:  MP F7A 921
Description:  When this picture was taken, Southern Railway geeps had been visiting the Missouri Pacific's Avondale Yard, at th[ west end of the Huey P. Long Bridge, for over a year on a run-through train between Birmingham and Avondale; but for some reason an MP F7 is accompanying the Southern power (GP38 2777, a GP35, a GP30 and another GP38) today. The 921 was originally a Texas & Pacific - the 1571 - as shown by the two headlights, and it would be among the last F-units in service on the MP. It was subsequently renumbered 1921, to make room for a GP38-2, and it was retired just one year after this photo. (approximnte month and day)

Eastbound Run-Through Train
Title:  Eastbound Run-Through Train

Here is one such train, stopped at the east end of the bridge, with nine engines: L&N GP35 1127, Auto-Train U36B's 4005 and 4007 (both new and on lease to the L&N), L&N GP38-2 4052, SP GP20 4069, SCL GP40 1567, SCL U30B's 1718 and 1717, and SCL GP35 1409 (approximate month and day)

Amtrak Trains 59 and 1
Title:  Amtrak Trains 59 and 1
Description:  Four one-year-old SDP40F units were side-by-side at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The 613 and 619 had just backed in with Train 59 - the southbound PANAMA LIMITED - while the 571 and 568 were waiting to leave at 1:00 with Train 1 – the westbound SUNSET. You could tell that the 571 was originally assigned to the SAN FRANCISCO ZEPHYR by the icicle breakers above its cab! The 613’s red emergency brake light was still on, and momentarily the PANAMA's power would head for the engine terminal where the crew would go off duty. (approximate date)
