This great looking, sleek 4-8-4 Northern (sometimes called Golden State in SP circles) type steam locomotive was built by Lima in May of 1941. Originally built with wheel skirts, they were removed in March of 1950 at Los Angeles. It was finally "vacated" (retired) in September of 1958 at Roseville, CA and sadly sold for scrap in March of 1959. Specs - serial #7813, class GS-4, tall 80" drivers, impressive 300 psi boiler pressure, 25.5x32" cylinders, engine wt of 475,000 lb and tractive effort of 64,800 lb. This is an Elroy Giffin photo. |
