PRR Juniata E&M Shop Yard, 1965 |
Description: |
Altoona Action. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Erecting & Machine Shop storage yard in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in March of 1965. The photographer is not identified. Prominent here (R to L) are PRR engines #9729 and #9721. Both are BF-16's built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton, rated at 1,600 horsepower each, and retired in July of 1966. #9729 was constructed in February of 1951, while #9721 was built in March of the same year. !In this context, they're being "cannibalized" for parts. Visible in the background is a wide variety of contemporary PRR diesel-electric locomotives. ("PrrFan18n") |

Description: |
Altoona Action. Here is an original 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 April 1965. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8701, ##9729, #9721, #9717, and #9712. #8701 is an FS-24M "Train Master" built by Fairbanks-Morse in August of 1956 and rated at 2,400 horsepower; it's moving the four "Sharks" to the East Altoona deadline storage yard. #9729, #9721, #9717, and #9712 are all BF-16's built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in early 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower each, and retired in July of 1966 after just 15 years of service. Not one PRR "Shark" was preserved for posterity. |
