AT&SF F7 306 |
Description: |
AT&SF F7 306 westbound on the CB&Q at Naperville, Illinois on August 10, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Sorry about the motion blur, I was done shooting photos for the day and was walking home on the street next to the tracks when I heard a horn unlike any on CB&Q locomotives, so I ran over the the tracks and this is what I got. Apparently, there was a problem on the AT&SF somewhere between Chicago and Galesburg, which is likely where this train joined home rails again. Trains of the AT&SF. CRI&P, C&NW and CMStP&P would use the CB&Q tracks to get around a problem on their own rails. And the CB&Q would use a neighbor's rails if there was a problem on its own rails. This locomotive is the second 306, the first 306 (c/n 9607), was renumbered in November 1952 to 325L, later becoming CF7 2419. Second 306 was built in December 1952 (c/n 17434) on EMD Order 6365A, leased to Amtrak between 1971 and 1973, renumbered to 333L and put into freight service, rebuilt in August 1977 to CF7 2443. |

AT&SF #306L |
Description: |
Santa Fe F7A #306L is the lead engine for a railfan excursion up the old California Southern, seen here at the then-current end-of-the-line at Fallbrook. Line originally went from Fallbrook Junction (on the line to San Diego) to Fallbrook, through Camp Pendleton, Temecula, Perris, San Bernardino, and then over Cajon Pass to Barstow. This could have been taken as part of a photo line for the fans taking the trip. Scanned with an Epson V550 from a duplicate 35mm slide, brand is unknown. |

Description: |
Santa Fe F7A #42C (later #310C) is the lead engine for train #2, the eastbound SAN FRANCISCO CHIEF, crossing the Mississippi River at Fort Madison, IA, after having made the station stop there. Taken from the upper deck of the bridge, which carries Iowa Highway 2/Illinois Route 9. This bridge dates from 1927, replacing the former bridge from 1887 (which also carried both rail and road traffic), and is still owned by BNSF today (the highway over the bridge is tolled). The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1999. Scanned with an Epson V550 from a duplicate Ektachrome 35mm slide. |

Description: |
It is March, 1971. Santa Fe Fairbanks Morse H-1244T number 542, one of three sisters built by the Beloit-based locomotive manufacturer in 1956 to move passenger equipment in Santa Fes Chicago yards, backs the combined Super Chief/El Capitan streamliner into Chicago Union Station. 542 wears Santa Fes "Billboard" yellow and blue paint scheme used for freight locomotives. The F7 A-B-B-A units behind wear Santa Fes classic "Warbonnet" paint scheme used on passenger locomotives. 542 was scrapped in 1974 but sister 543 survives at the Illinois Railroad Museum. |
