Description:  Union Pacific Railroad GTEL (Gas Turbine-Electric Locomotive) 12 at Cheyenne, Wyoming on August 27, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 12 and 12B were completed by GE during February 1960 (c/n's 33227 and 33228) and were actually a single locomotive. The first unit contained the cab, 850 horsepower auxiliary diesel engine, and other control equipment, the second (B-unit) contained the turbine and electric generators. Together they produced 8500 horsepower. The locomotive was capable of producing 10,000 horsepower, but the electrical system was not rated for that power. The tender contained 24,000 gallons of Bunker C fuel oil and was heated to enable the thick fuel to flow efficiently. The fuel tank under the cab unit contained 2500 gallons of diesel fuel for the auxiliary diesel generator, which was also used to start the turbine. This unit was retired in October 1969, victim of high fuel costs. The trucks were recycled under UP's U50C's.

Description:  Union Pacific 14 and 16 were built in March and June 1960 as a part of an order for thirty 8500-horsepower 2-unit gas turbine electric locomotives (GTEL's). They were retired in February 1970 and sold in August 1971; but the A-units remained on the UP at Salt Lake City until March 1979, when they were moved to Kansas City. Both were subsequently acquired by the Illinois Railway Museum. (date approximate)

Description:  At the shops in Cheyenne, GTEL 16 is between runs. 16 was one of thirty 8500 HP GTELs built by GE between 1958 and 1961. 16 was built in June 1960. It was sold to Nielsen Enterprises in 1971. It was later sold to Continental Leasing. The A Unit was moved to Kansas City in 1979. It was then donated to Illinois Railway Museum, but was scrapped in Kansas City in 1992.

Description:  Union Pacific's turbine 16 was photographed with the hostler engine being started at Ogden, Utah. The big turbine was built by General Electric in June of 1960, placed into service June 23, 1960 and then retired February 28, 1970. An interesting note; on the very next day, only a few short miles away, the Golden Spike Centennial reenactment was to take place, quite a difference between 1869 and 1969.
