Description:  AHC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Al Bubb that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 5 June 1949. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4554, an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in September of 1944, and retired in September of 1956 after 33 years of service. It's rounding the Curve with a mixed-cargo freight train on its way down the Allegheny Mountains to the eastbound receiving yards in Altoona.

GTW 5812
Title:  GTW 5812
Description:  A CN local rests along Union St. at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 8 Nov. '19. Local was preparing to head for Waupaca, WI. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

GTW 6226
Title:  GTW 6226
Description:  A CN local crosses the Fox River via the former C&NW bridge in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 9 Nov. '19. Local was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. The former MILW bridge, now sans rails, runs parallel a few feet to the left of the C&NW bridge. The MILW abandoned this stretch of track in 1981, portions of it were sold to the C&NW. Now just a short branch line, this stretch of rail is a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. Some of the homes along W. Prospect Ave. can be seen atop the bluff in the background. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

Description:  A CN local crosses the Fox River via the former C&NW bridge, parallels W. Edison Ave. (originally Mill St.), and passes beneath the Oneida Skyline Bridge as it heads northeast through 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 9 Nov. '19. Local was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks and had one locomotive, GTW 6226. The Atlas Paper Co. mill, 425 W. Water St., stands on the far side of the river at left. Completed in 1878 and expanded over the years, it eventually became part of the Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C). The mill ceased operation ca. 1999, the year K-C donated it to the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame. After some of the additions were razed, the Hall of Fame opened its new home and its interactive museum, the Paper Discovery Center, on 26 Feb. ’05. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

MILW 4-4-2 #2 - Chicago, Milwaukee, St Paul & Pacific
Title:  MILW 4-4-2 #2 - Chicago, Milwaukee, St Paul & Pacific
Description:  Beautiful example of an early streamlined steam locomotive but now near its end. Alfred Bruce (The Steam Locomotive in America, 1952, 292-293) describes the performance of this Alco product as: "Their ample boiler capacity, 19 x 28 cylinders, 84" drivers, and 300 psi made them about the highest-speed steam locomotive engines ever constructed. During the time-schedule stabilizing runs, the hand of the speed indicator was often reported against the pin at 128 miles per hour. Exactly what maximum speed was reached is not known - but it was plenty!" For comparison, 128 mph is two miles per hour faster than the 126 mph the LNER's Mallard achieved in 1937 for the highest officially recognized speed posted by a steam locomotive. Chas. K. Willhoft photo

MILW 4-4-2 #2 - Chicago, Milwaukee, St Paul & Pacific
Title:  MILW 4-4-2 #2 - Chicago, Milwaukee, St Paul & Pacific
Description:  Proud face that made the 4-4-2 wheel arrangement famous. According to one online source - Among the last 4-4-2s to be built, the engine had high drivers and a brightly colored, air-smoothed casing. Although seemingly lightweight, the four oil-fired engines developed over 3,000 cylinder horsepower and kept a 6 1/4 hour schedule over the 408-mile run between Chicago and Minneapolis with 9 cars. Alfred Bruce gives further details about the design: "The Hiawatha engines had their main rods connected to the front axle and were remarkably stable riding." He adds that this quartet were among the first to press a conventionally staybolted boiler to 300 psi. He also notes that the streamlining fairing proved very effective in protecting the crew and the train from wandering livestock. One of the four, traveling at 100 mph, hit a cow and sent it "sailing out over the telephone wires along one side of the right of way." All of the cow's bones were broken, he observes, but the hide was intact. Gene Connelly photo

Title:  MILW 4-4-2 #3010 - Chicago, Milwaukee, St Paul & Pacific
Description:  Here is another example of a 4-4-2 Atlantic wheel arrangement built by the Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin predecessor) for the Milwaukee Road. Originally numbered #410, it was renumbered several times with #3010 being done in November os 1912. Original Specs - 78" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 13x26" high pressure cylinders, 22x26" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 140,700 lb, tractive effort of 14,198 lb. Later, this loco was simplified when given 19x26" cylinders. No date, location or photographer was given for this photo so date is an approximation. Does anyone recognize the background building? It's angle and shape might fix the location.

NOPB MP2000D #2001 - New Orleans Public Belt
Title:  NOPB MP2000D #2001 - New Orleans Public Belt
Description:  Somewhat confusing background on this loco. It appears that it was built by Motive Power Industries of Boise, ID in May of 1998 as their demonstrator #2002, serial #2396-02. It must have been sold to the NOPB afterward. No date or photographer was listed for this nice color slide unfortunately so an approximate date based on loco condition and paint was used.

NOPB MP2000D #2002 - New Orleans Public Belt
Title:  NOPB MP2000D #2002 - New Orleans Public Belt
Description:  The background on this loco is much more difficult to find. The serial number for this Motive Power Industries loco is listed as 766069-13 but I can't find a manufacture date. No date or photographer was listed for this slide unfortunately so an apporximate date was used.
