CRI&P GP38-2 4317, Blue Island, Illinois, October 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in October 1976 (c/n 757136-3), later becoming MP 2255, then UP 2255, then UP 755, then GMTX 2127. This particular locomotive was named, "Charles O. Laverty", a supporter of the Rock Island in its waning years. He was a Rock Island shipper, owner and operator of large grain elevator (Laverty Elevator) in Indianola, Iowa. Most (but not all) of the GP38-2's were named for cities, politicians, and customers of the Rock Island who were supportive Rock Island's efforts to survive. |
