Iver Tranes General Whats the purpose of the extra 'ring' around the radiator fan on some GP20s? I only seem to see it on 20s, but not on all of them. 8/26/2013 9:38:31 AM
Chuck Zeiler General I could not find out the purpose of the flare in the fan shroud, which was used originally only on the GP20. It appears that like all things related to locomotive design, the fan had development phases. The GP20 was equipped with a 48 inch cooling fan behind the cab, a 48 inch dynamic brake pan top-fan (if equipped with dynamic brakes), a 36 inch cap-top cooling fan and a final 48 inch cooling fan at the rear of the unit. A flared style fan was used on the front and rear 48 inch cooling fans until April 1961, when a pan-top style fan came into use on the cooling fans. To add a twist to this story, the locomotive pictured was rebuilt from a late-model GP9 equipped with a pair of 48 inch fans. Number 955 appears to be one-of-a-kind. 8/26/2013 10:52:59 AM
