CB&Q 4-4-2 P-5 2566
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-4-2 class P-5 2566 at Denver, Colorado on an unknown date in 1951, photograph by H. O'Hanlon, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 2566 was built by Baldwin in 1905 (c/n 26735) as number 2710, a class P-3-C (balanced compound), rebuilt to a simple class P-5 in 1927 and renumbered 2566. It was retired in June 1948. I have no information when it was converted to burn oil. The class P-5 Atlantics were created by rebuilding six P-2-C and 14 class P-3-C locomotives. This was accomplished by adding new cylinders, new front engine frame, Schmidt-type superheater, new tube sheets, tube sand tube arrangement, and applying Walschaerts valve gear, and 74 inch driving wheels. The original eight foot long cabs were eventually replaced with shorter ones.
