Album Info:Roseville is located at a busy crossroads in California's rail network. Located northeast of Sacramento, Roseville is home to the massive J.R. Davis yard, owned by Union Pacific. This is ex-Southern Pacific territory, and trains originating here cross the famed Donner Pass heading east, follow the Cal-P line west to Oakland, traverse the Central Valley lines south to Los Angeles, or turn north, along the ex-Western Pacific through Feather River Canyon, or further north into Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. Also includes images of trains along the UP Martinez Sub between Roseville and CP Sacramento.

Description:  Union Pacific 807, an aged Mopac GP38-2, is on an engine track at UPs Roseville yard. The unit was built in 1981, and was renumbered from 2307 in the mid 2000s. In the background is AC45CCTE 8051. Taken from Amtrak #6, EB California Zephyr.

Description:  Union Pacific 8051, an AC45CCTE, is on an engine lead at the east end of UPs Roseville Yard. The unit was built in 2012, the yard in 1864. Just out of frame to the right is the siding where UP stores its Rotary Snowplows and Flangers, with the Jordan spreaders at Truckee. Taken from Amtrak #6, EB California Zephyr.

SP Rotary 211
Title:  SP Rotary 211
Description:  Rotary Snowplow 211, still stenciled for SP Maintenance of Way, sits on a yard track at Roseville. The structure to the right of the B-unit houses other rotary snowplows, flangers, and Jordan spreaders. Most of the spreaders, however, are stationed at Truckee. The rotary was built in the late 1920s, and was later converted to diesel power, with the help of SPMW F7B 8211 behind it. The B-uint was built in 1953, and was converted into a "snail" in the late 60s. A few of these brutes are still owned by UP, and 4 are preserved in Sacramento, Portola, Truckee, and the 4th on display at the East end of Roseville Yard. Taken from Amtrak #6, EB California Zephyr.

Title:  UP SD59NX Duo
Description:  UP 9924 and 9925, both EMD SD59MX units, are parked in the yard at Roseville. These units were rebuilt from UP SD60Ms, and are Tier 2 compliant. This is one of the few times I have caught two consecutively numbered units in one place.

Description:  The Union Pacific Roseville engine shops are mostly quiet on this late February morning. On the far right is GP38-2 589 poking out from behind one of the shop buildings. In the center is AC44 5695, and a flanger set powered by GP38-2s 574 and 569. On the left are two more flanger sets, powered by more GP38-2s.

Flanger Set
Title:  Flanger Set
Description:  A flanger set rests in the yard at Roseville. The set consists of flanger 326, and GP38-2s 583 and 602. 583 and 602 are both ex-Southern Pacific units, and were built in mid-1980. They have spent most of the last 15 years assigned to snow service on Donner Pass. These units are fitted with snow-fighting equipment unique from their general service counterparts, including all-weather windows, icicle breakers (folded down on 583 and 602), and grating to keep the front windows clear of snow. Behind 602 is another GP38, the 572.

Title:  Southern Pacific 324
Description:  SPMW 324 is a flanger, the standard snow-fighting equipment on Donner Pass. These units are used to clear snow from between the tracks, and work in conjunction with Jordan spreaders to keep the line clear through the Sierra-Nevada winters. While the spreaders are used to clear large drifts from the right-of-way, flangers clear the snow from between the tracks, and also serve as a place where supplies can be carried across the mountains.

Description:  A Sacramento Regional Transit LRV negotiates street trackage on 12th Street, near downtown Sacramento. The Blue Line train is just clearing the intersection of 12th, Dos Rios St, and North B St. The Blue Line runs from Cosumnes River College in Florin north, through Downtown Sacramento, and then northeast to Watt Avenue, south of McClellan Airport.
