UP MacA-63 2281
Title:  UP MacA-63 2281
Description:  Union Pacific Railroad MacA-63 2281 at an unknown location on an unknown date, photo by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. This is another unmarked negative that I purchased from Dick Rumbolz in 1965. The date entered is based on the retirement date, the location is based on most of the UP photos I have from Dick Rumbolz were shot in Council Bluffs. According to utahrails.net, This locomotive was built by Baldwin in March 1918 (c/n 48143) and was a coal burner. It was originally classed as MK-63, during WWII it was re-classed as MacA-65 (MacArthur class). It was retired in July 1954. It appears that the trailing locomotive is 9000, a 4-12-2 that was saved. That might help narrow down the location. I don't believe the 4-12-2's were allowed to go to Council Bluffs.

UP C-57 430
Title:  UP C-57 430
Description:  Union Pacific Railroad C-57 2-8-0 430 at an unknown location, on an unknown date, photo by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Unfortunately, I have no information about this photo. This was a negative I purchased from Dick Rumbolz in 1965. He sent a batch of negatives, I selected which ones I wanted, mailed the rejects back to him with a check for what I kept. This particular negative cost me 45 cents. From utahrails.net I determined that this locomotive was built in October 1900 by Baldwin (c/n 18324) as a Vauclain compound and assigned road number 1650, classed C-57. It was later simplified and retired in June 1958.

Title:  C&NW RS27 901
Description:  Chicago & North Western Railway RS27 901 at Council Bluffs, Iowa on May 13, 1962, Kodachrome by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. The C&NW acquired four RS27's, this one built by Alco in March 1962 (c/n 83602), returned to Alco after four years as credit toward C425's. I'll bet there's an Alco salesman story to go with this deal. This unit (and the other three returned C&NW RS27's) were repainted by Alco and put into a lease fleet, eventually sold to Precision National which leased this unit to the CP, then sold the 901 to the GB&W in May 1976. It went to WC in September 1987, then to Minnesota Commercial in 1993.

Description:  Union Pacific Railroad RS27 677 at Council Bluffs, Iowa on an unknown day in September 1962, I'm pretty sure the?photographer was Lou Schmitz (Kodachrome slide unmarked except for location and date), Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 677 was completeed in January 1960 as Alco Demonstrator 640-4, one of five RS27 (DL-640) demonstrators built and numbered 640-1 through 640-5. Including the five demonstrators, only 27 RS27's were built, directly competing with GE's U25B and EMD's GP30. The UP acquired four RS27 demonstrators in September 1961, and acquired four production U25B demonstrators at the same time. The railroad followed up with an order for 12 more U25B's, but did not order additional RS27's. This unit was wrecked November 23, 1968 at Aikens, Nebraska, and scrapped by the UP at Omaha.

UP FA1 1632
Title:  UP FA1 1632
Description:  UP FA1 1632 built September 1948 (c/n 76003) retired February 1965, at Council Bluffs, Iowa, November 1962, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. It is pictured with Farr Aire grills, a railroad modification. Farr Aire grills were superior in keeping rain and snow out of the engine room. The UP acquired FA1's and FB1's in three batches in 1947-48, for a total of 44 FA1's and 44 FB1's, making the UP the largest single owner of that model, 15% of Alco's production run. The UP primarily operated its fleet on the Los Angeles and Salt Lake line, and as a result Alco was able to advertise that the UP had assigned the highest tractive effort ratings to the FA/FB's over its severe 2.2% grades over Cajon Pass of any of its road freight power. The ratings for four-unit 6000 horsepower locomotives were 3000 tons eastbound and 4000 tons westbound. Unfortunatley, a welding defect in the engine block assembly struck the UP's FA/FB fleet, necessitating a 100% warranty replacement, and as a result, these 88 FA/FB's were the UP's last big acquisition from Alco. The problem was later found to be a process defect in the weldment between the saddle and block. The first indication of a cracked block was the failure of the crankshaft due to induced bearing misalignment. This problem resulted in the replacement of blocks and crankshafts in all 88 of UP's FA1's and FB1's. All told about 600 blocks had to be replaced before process improvements eliminated this problem.
