WATX 400 - Former ACL Diner "Moultrie"
Title:  WATX 400 - Former ACL Diner "Moultrie"
Description:  Pullman-Standard built this 36 seat dining car in April of 1950 as Moultrie assigned to the Atlantic Coast Line and later SCL #5954. It operated on New York to Miami trains until 1971. With the formation of AMTRAK, the diner continued Florida service as AMTK #8084 until 1981 when AMTRAK sold the car to a short-line dinner train operation in Virginia. The Watauga Valley Chapter NRHS purchased the car in 1989, completely upgrading the mechanical systems to AMTRAK standards and fully renovating the interior. It was assigned AAR reporting mark WATX 400.

WATX Diner #400 "Moultrie"

Description:  The WATX Diner #400 "Moultrie" is a historic, fully restored 36-seat lightweight railroad dining car currently owned by the Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society & Museum (WVRHS&M). Originally built in the 1950s, the car served major passenger routes in the Southeast before becoming a premier, Amtrak-certified private dining car used for special excursions and events. Built by Pullman-Standard for the Atlantic Coast Line (ACL) railroad. It was one of ten lightweight 36-seat diners in its series and was chosen to feature in Pullman-Standard's official builder's photo. Transferred to Amtrak upon its formation, continuing its service on Florida-bound trains for another decade (1971-81). The Moultrie is fully operational, featuring a 10-burner Vulcan range, heavy-duty kitchen equipment (ovens, griddle, dishwasher), and a classic atmosphere with matching china and silver.
