Tom Beckett General The good looking right of way on the left was being cleared for construction of NY 17. This location is actually Gibson, east of Corning. It's where the Erie(the abandoned row) and the Lackawanna ran side by side, and was the west end of the consolidation of facilites done in 1959, where the DLW ran its trains on the Erie from West BD(now CP JOHNSON) on the west side of Binghamton to this point. The DLW then went back on its own line to Buffalo. In the late 70's/early 80's, tracks were moved over to the DLW alignment, and the Erie side pulled up. The channel of the Tioga River-out of the picture to the left-was also realigned to create space for the highway, which at the time was an expressway to the east side of Corning, then ran downtown on Denison Pkwy, and resumed the expressway where the Riverside interchange is now. The abandoned right of way in the left of the picture, along with the former river channel, became the next expressway section of NY 17, and ran as far as NY 414 unti 6/10/2011 10:43:56 AM
Tom Beckett General Hmm...ran out of space.....continuing previous comment: The section of highway that was to be built on the abandoned row in the photo went as far as NY 414, where it ended. In 1995, the rest of the gap on NY 17 was completed with a bypass along the north side of town. The Erie row being lifted itself was a bypass, replacing a section of street running through downtown about 1950. This included a new station, which was torn down only in the last 8 or 10 years, and a connection to the NYC line to Jersey Shore PA, that became the CP GLASS complex on Conrail. 6/10/2011 10:55:25 AM
