Derailment. Here is an original photo that I took at the site of a derailment in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 21 May 1965. At the right is the "western" work train and steam-powered crane that are working on the derailed cars and locomotives of the eastbound freight train on the next track over. Partially visible in the immediate foreground is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8663, an AS-18AM built by the American Locomotive Company in January of 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. The large white structure visible in the background is the Altoona Passenger Station; to its right is the wrought-iron 12th Street Footbridge; to its right are some of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shop buildings. Photo taken from the 17th Street Bridge. (#3 of 14) |
