BN GP30 2251 |
Description: |
BN GP30 2251 on Galesburg, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1981, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built as CB&Q GP30 974 in May 1963 (c/n 28296) on EMD Order 7652, it became BN 2251 sometime after the March 2, 1970 merger. In October 1989 it was rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen to GP39M 2824, and in May 2001 became BNSF 2824. Note the horns at the back of the unit. The plan was to keep the horns from freezing up in winter by placing them over the first radiator fan, which cycled on first, thus blowing warm radiator air over the bells of the horns, keeping them defrosted. Im not sure how successful this was. |
