CB&Q Class DL-3 MINNEAPOLIS
Title:  CB&Q Class DL-3 MINNEAPOLIS
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class DL-3 MINNEAPOLIS, date, location, and photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. It looks like a builder's photo, so I'm guessing the location was Pullman, on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, date was sometime around March 1928, Pullman-Standard photograph. This car was built by Pullman-Standard in March 1928 as MINNEAPOLIS ( no number ). The entire car was dedicated to lounge service, and included a small buffet. It was assigned to the Black Hawk, ( No. 47 and 48 ), a daily train between Chicago and Minneapolis. It was converted to coach number 4800 on December 19, 1942, scrapped at Eola December 31, 1965.

CB&Q The Round-Up
Title:  CB&Q The Round-Up
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Office Car, named THE ROUND-UP, eastbound on Train #10, the Denver Zephyr at Naperville, Illinois on July 30, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built as solarium lounge observation 570 for the Spokane Portland & Seattle by Barney & Smith in 1915, it was purchased in 1934 by the CB&Q and numbered 220 and named Mississippi. In 1936, it was rebuilt as a solarium parlor for use on subsidiary Colorado & Southern's train 31-32, the Zephyr Connection, and on the left side it was named Cheyenne, and on the right side it was named Denver. During WWII it was converted to a chair car and numbered 4811. During February 1946, it was converted back to its original configuration and name/number (220-Mississippi). Two months later, at this very spot, headed in the opposite direction, it was involved in a disasterous collision between the Advance Flyer and the Exposition Flyer. It was removed to the shops in Aurora, where it sat derelict for several years until it was pulled into the shops and sheathed in stainless steel for conversion to a business car. It emerged from the shops during January 1953 still a heavyweight car (201,900 pounds), and named The Round-Up. It became the BN The Round-Up, and was sold to the Canadian National April 1972. It was sold by the CN to Bombardier Ltd., and re-sold to Ron Salisbury, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

CB&Q 68

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Office Car 68 at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in April 1968, duplicate slide by Gib Allbach, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 68 was built as a wood car by Pullman in 1897 as CB&Q 369, named "Maiden Rock" as a chair car for Chicago - Twin Cities service. After being renumbered 4151 in 1904, it was steel-sheathed and converted to office bar 68 at Aurora, Illinois in April 1917, and assigned to the Traffic Department. It was sold to Herb Stern of Lincoln, Nebraska in 1963. It was sold again in 1987 to Al Dunton and Chuck Weart, and moved to the Great Western Railway in Loveland, Colorado for serwice.

Number 96 was built in 1886 by Barney & Smith as Chicago Burlington & Northern B-99. As built it was an all-wood business car with open platforms at both ends. In 1895 it was renumbered to CB&N 45 and in 1902 it became CB&Q 90. In 1906 it was rebuilt by CB&Q's Aurora Shops becoming CB&Q 96, still an all-wood car but with one observation platform, the other end was occupied by the refrigerator. In 1915 electric lights replaced the Pintsch gas fixtures and in 1917 a steel underframe replaced the wood. Steel sheathing was applied in the 1920's over the original tongue-and-groove siding, cast steel trucks replaced the wood-beam ones, and a shower was added to the main restroom. In the 1930's ice air-conditioning, oil heat and Thermopane windows were added. In 1962 a minor kitchen fire sidelined the car, and it was sold to the Intermountain Chapter of the NRHS. It was used in excursion service until the advent of Amtrak in 1971, when it was moved to the Colorado Railroad Museum for display.

CB&Q 97

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Office Car 97 at Princeton, Illinois on an unknown date, ( circa 1940 ), photograph by Duncan Bryant, Marshall Pochay collection. Number 97 was built by the CB&Q at Aurora, Illinois in 1882 as number 153, a 50 foot coach. In 1915 the Aurora Shops added 14 feet to the middle and the 153 became Office Car 97 and assigned to the General Superintendent, Iowa District. Around 1940 it was assigned to the rail detector crew for accommodations away from home. In 1951, number 97 was renumbered to 251110 and continued in detector service until 1959, when it was replaced and dismantled.

CB&Q Office Car 100

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Office Car Second 100 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 7, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The car is on the rear of Train #2, the Galesburg Local, which would be discontinued a little over a month after this photo date. The car still wears the simulated stainless steel paint, also known as shadow line.

This car was assigned to the CB&Q's vice-president of operations. This was the second of three cars assigned road number 100. The following is excerpted from the Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin 17, Office Cars: First 100 was a coach converted to business car around 1881, off the roster by 1925. Second 100 (pictured) was purchased from Pullman in 1914 by Charles Curtiss James as El Paso & Southwestern 1914. The EP&SW was a planned railroad to connect two Phelps Dodge Copper Company Railroad interests, which James hoped to expand into a transcontinental railroad. That plan did not materialize and the EP&SW was sold to the SP. The 1914 was transferred to the CB&Q (becoming second CB&Q 100) when James invested his EP&SW sales proceeds into the CB&Q and WP. By 1928, James contracted with Pullman for a new private car, third CB&Q 100, and second 100 was transferred to the WP in 1929. On September 2, 1931, a fire consumed much of the CB&Q's Aurora, Illinois car shops where third 100 was stored, and the car was destroyed. Second 100 was brought back from the WP and relettered for CB&Q as 100. By 1939, James had decided to sell the car to the CB&Q for $1.00. The Q took advantage of this generous offer, and in 1940 the car was air-conditioned. During the 1951 the Burlington's business car fleet was upgraded, and second 100 received a new air-conditioning system, roller bearing journals and truck-mounted brake cylinders, Titelock couplers, Thermopane windows, and a modernized kitchen and interior improvements. In 1952 the permanent markers and herald were added. It also received shadow-lined aluminum paint, one of only two office cars so painted, which lasted until 1969 giving way to simple aluminum paint. Second 100 made it into the BN roster, but in May 1971 was sold for use as a summer home in Wisconsin. Note that the first two windows at the far end of the car are a drop sash type. These were located in the kitchen, which was not included in the air-conditioning system of the car.

CB&Q DA-5 176

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Diner class DA-5 176 at the 14th Street Coach Yard in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in May 1965, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler slide collection. I came across this slide for 25 cents in a Sears mount at a hobby shop. Number 176 was built by the American Car & Foundry in April 1917. This is the aisle side passing the kitchen where the small windows are. The CB&Q owned eight class DA-5 diners, two (#'s 172 and 176) had a small lounge at the far end (the last two windows). It was repainted silver (aluminum) and used as protection for Zephyrs, although it would only be suitable for secondary trains and fantrips by this photo date. This particular car was sold for scrap to Northwestern Steel & Wire in January 1967.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Diner 192 plan scanned from the book, Passenger Car Library Volume 1, by PRC Publications Inc., by Chuck Zeiler. Of interest are the sliding tables and seating against the windows. A later plan shows that this arrangement was changed to conventional seating. I'm not sure the sliding table plan was ever implemented, but if it was, it must have made for interesting dining during rough train-handling situations. The trucks are incorrect.

I believe this was originally a CB&Q document, and it illustrates a change in interior configuration seating arrangement. More than likely someone determined that sliding tables in a moving train (as shown in the original plan) wasn't a good idea.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Diner 192* named Silver Spoon, at the Museum of Transportation in Saint Louis, Missouri on May 25, 1986, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 192 was one of three diners built by Budd, ordered in Octobdr 1937 on Job 946, delivered in May 1938. The original assignment was on the Aristocrat operating between Chicago and Denver, but the three diners spent most of their careers as spare cars in the Zephyr fleet. They were used on the Twiq Cities Zephyrs in 1947 during the period after the 9904-9905 articulated trainsets were assigned to the Nebraska Zephyrs and before the new dining cars were delivered in 1948. This car illustrates the pre-war Budd design for the ZephEr fleet, with screwed in windows, cutouts in the lower fluting for the trucks and inboard truck-mounted brake cylinders.

The trucks have inboard truck-mounted brake cylinders. I believe the trucks were manufactured by Commonwealth, but I have not (yet) determined the model number. A CB&Q Diagram Sheet shows the trucks as No. 3-L1, but that's likely the CB&Q designation.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Diner number 195 at the Zephyr Pit in Chicago, Illinois, date and photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. I bought this slide at a hobby shop, one of many slides tossed in a cardboard box sitting on the counter marked 25 cents each. It is in a Sears slide mount, marked "Silver Restaurant". This car was one of three dining cars ordered in October 1945 by the CB&Q on Budd Job 9624-019 as the Burlington's contribution to the California Zephyr. Delivered in November 1948, it was one of six (eventually seven) diners placed in CZ sevice. The entire ownership of the CB&Q's CZ cars was transferred to Amtrak, with this car becoming Amtrak 8052, and after conversion to HEP became 8504.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Diner 202, named Silver Tureen, date, location, and photographer unknown, CB&Q Public Relations photograph, Chuck Zeiler collection. I'm guessing that the photo was shot at Budd's Red Lion Plant in Philadelphia around October 1956. The photo has the following attached: "# 24-169 Burlington's Diner for the Denver Zephyr between Chicago, Denver, and Colorado Springs. Train features Vista-Domes and the new Slumbercoach, all built by Budd." And the following is from the book, The Passenger Car Library Volume 1 - CB&Q: Job 9624-169 - 2 Dining cars ordered 2/55, delivered 10/56. Dining cars 201 - Silver Chef and 202 - Silver Tureen provided first class dining for the passengers. The cars ran on the Denver Zephyr until they were sold to Amtrak in 1972. Finally, the following is excerpted from the book, Amtrak By The Numbers: CB&Q 202, Silver Tureen, became Amtrak 8055, rebuilt to HEP in September 1979 and renumbered to 8501, retired by Amtrak in March 2007.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 225, named JUNO, on the rear of westbound Train # 11, the Nebraska Zephyr, at Naperville, Illinois on January 3, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was ordered December 1935, and delivered a year later, by Budd on Job 964:2. The order was for two seven-car articulated trainsets for the 2nd Twin Cities Zephyr. By the time of this photo, the trainsets had been re-assigned to the Nebraska Zephyr and reduced to five-car trainsets. This trainset currently resides at the Illinois Railway Museum.

This car was ordered December 1935, and delivered a year later, by Budd on Job 964:2. The order was for two seven-car articulated trainsets for the 2nd Twin Cities Zephyr. By the time of this photo, the trainsets had been re-assigned to the Nebraska Zephyr and reduced to five-car trainsets. This photo was used in Bulletin 22 of the Burlington Route Historical Society, and here is how Editor F. Hol Wagner captioned it: "When even one car of the articulated trainset required shop work, the entire train had to be withdrawn from service. To ferry the trainset to the Aurora shops, it was usually tacked on the rear of a westbound suburban train and deadheaded from Chicago's 14th Street coachyard out to the shops, as exemplified in this March 1, 1966 view of the five car Train of the Goddesses trailing the two bi-levels of dinky #107 at Naperville."

Train #12 was a hard train to photograph, at least for me. I lived in Naperville, and by the time #12 got there, it was about 8:45 PM, too late to expose film. But I happened to be in Galva on this date (about 100 miles west of Naperville), and caught #12 pausing for its scheduled station stop at 6:26 PM CST (its 7:26 DST locally). The Nebraska Zephyr was a mail train with passenger accommodations, in this case, the articulated trainset from the second Twin Cities Zephyr. The June 1965 Official Guide lists the following equipment for #11 and #12: Observation, 30 Parlor seats. Chicago-Omaha-Lincoln; Dining-Refreshment Car, Chicago-Omaha; Reclining Seat Chair Cars, Chicago-Omaha-Lincoln.

This was train # 11, the Nebraska Zephyr which carried mostly storage mail, but also included passenger accommodations. Pictured is the seven-car articulated trainset built in 1936 for the second Twin Cities Zephyr. It was displaced in 1948 by the third Twin Cities Zephyr. Known as the Train of the Gods ( in keeping with Zephyr, which was based on Zephyrus, Greek god of the West Wind ), the car names were chosen from Roman and Greek mythology, and another similar trainset was known as Train of the Goddesses. Two months after this photo date, this trainset would be withdrawn and two cars removed. It would continue to serve as the Nebraska Zephyr passenger accommodations until January 21, 1968. The Train of the Gods was sold to Saudia Arabia, but did not fare well in the sandy desert conditions. It is rumored to still be in Saudia Arabia. The Train of the Goddesses went to the Illinois Railway Museum.

CB&Q 235 SILVER CHATEAU
Title:  CB&Q 235 SILVER CHATEAU
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad dome lounge observation 235, named SILVER CHATEAU, on the rear of Train Number 10, the eastbound Denver Zephyr at Denver Union Station on August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was one of two built for the 1956 Denver Zephyr (DZ). The order was placed to the Budd Company in February 1955 (Job 9646-169) and delivered in September 1956. The other car built on this order was 236, the 'Silver Veranda'. The forward parlor section and the rear observation section each seated 11 passengers, while the bar/lounge under the dome served 12 patrons. Ultimately, these two cars found their way into Amtrak service, renumbered 9330 and 9331. I don't know the final disposition. There were two other blunt-end dome observation cars built for the 1953 Kansas City Zephyr; 365, named 'Silver Terrace' and 366 named 'Silver Tower', but they were a different configuration, and their domes were shifted forward of the center of the carbody. They became Amtrak 9320 and 9321.

I had the good fortune to ride this car on this photo date. My parents took me on a trip to Colorado Springs in August 1964. I had a single room in the Slumbercoach, while my parents enjoyed a compartment in one of the sleepers. The Slumbercoach was a tight fit, packing 24 single and eight double bedrooms in an 85 foot car. Although each single bedroom had its own toilet, the only way to use the toilet at night was to open the door to the hallway, step out, lift the bed up and stow it away. When in use, the bed covered the toilet, in fact the bed took up the whole room. I was a real pain on the trip, I wanted to do train stuff, my parents wanted to do tourist stuff. I was only 16, so they won. After a week, it was time to head back to Chicago, and they finally broke down and dumped me off at the train station while they packed and checked out of the hotel. I shot photos of everything with flanged wheels that I saw.

At the time of this photo, the arrangement was for select cars to be removed from the DZ upon arrival at Denver, and attached to the rear of the waiting D&RGW Train Number 1, the Royal Gorge (RG). These cars were the DZ's Colorado Springs Connection, and would be uncoupled at Colorado Springs. When they were empty, a waiting D&RGW switcher would collect them and any freight cars that needed transfer, and this 'mixed train' would move to the other side of town, where they would be attached to the northbound D&RGW Train Number 2 (now on AT&SF tracks) for return to Denver. In Denver, a waiting CB&Q Alco S2 switcher would remove them from the RG and switch them into the waiting DZ.

This gave me the opportunity to hop off and snap more photos. Once the train was assembled and ready to leave, I got aboard, hanging out a dutch door and snapping more photos. This met with disapproval of the crew, and I was banished to my Slumbercoach room, at least until they could collect the tickets. I escaped from my room and wandered the length of the train, sitting in vacant coach seats for a while, visiting every dome, peeking into empty compartments, and finally enjoying a fine steak dinner in the diner with my parents. After everyone retired for the evening, I made my way back to the Silver Chateau, which by late evening was nearly vacant. I parked myself in the dome and watched as evening turning into night, and the Mars light of the lead E8 Number 9939A danced across the tracks ahead. I spent the entire evening in that dome savoring every moment, and each new crew checked in on me, but left me alone in the dome, enjoying green signals turning to red as we made our way across mid-America. As the evening wore on, the only occupants of the Silver Chateau were the conductor, the rear brakeman, and me.

Number 302 , the SILVER HOURS, was built by Budd on Job 96117, ordered in February 1940, delivered in June 1940, configured with 24 dining seat (six tables, four chairs each table, located in the forward section), and 22 seats in the rear parlor section.

This car was built by Budd on Job 9657-112, one of two (the other was number 321, named SILVER PATIO) ordered in March 1951, delivered in December 1952, intended for service on the Kansas City Zephyr. Forward of the dome was a coffee shop that seated 17 passengers, under the 24-seat dome was a six-seat lounge and buffet, behind the dome was a 24 seat coach section with a conductor's seat (second small window from the vestibule door). The first small window next to the vestible door was the Womens restroom. After the BN merger, this car was assigned BN 1100, not applied, sold to Amtrak, becoming AMTK 9800, retired in 1977, then sold to Gerome Bulock/Building Leasing Corp., Tom Johnson/Rail Dome Corp., becoming RDCX 320 (800287) in 1987, and now operates on the Branson Scenic Railroad.

The following is from the book, "CB&Q Color Guide To Freight And Passenger Equipment", by Michael J. Spoor: "CB&Q #326 was one of two dining-lounge cars, Class DO-2. It had been outshopped by Pullman in October 1913 as dining car #168. It was converted to a dining-lounge configuration in 1934 which resulted in the dining area accommodating 18 patrons and the lounging room providing seats for 20." In the book Mike used a photo by F. Hol Wagner showing the car in active service at Kansas City in June 1963. It was scrapped at Eola, Illinois, August 27, 1965.

Seen here on a steam-powered (2-8-2 #4960) fantrip to Rockford that featured stainless steel Zephyr equipment. This car was ordered for use on the Ak-Sar-Ben (Nebraska, spelled backwards) and as protection equipment for the California Zephyr (CZ). It was built by Budd on Job 9659-112, ordered in March 1951 and delivered in December 1952. The plan was upon the arrival of the eastbound CZ in Chicago, this car would be pulled off (along with the dining car and two 10-6 sleepers) and sent west on the Ak-Sar-Ben Zephyr. The CZ cars returned the next morning on the eastbound Ak-Sar-Ben and were placed back on the westbound CZ. This car was built to Plan 9533, three bedroom, one drawing room, 12 passenger buffet-bar-lounge, 13 passenger observation, and a dome seating 24. It was Amtrak #9253 for some time, and is now privately-owned.

The CZ's observation cars also had two bedrooms that could be configured as pictured, but the curvature of the roof would have been opposite as seen here. On the back of the print, it is stamped: No. 4797 MASTER BEDROOM Master Bedroom on the California Zephyr is accomplished by opening partitions between two bedrooms, accommodating six passengers by day and providing four beds at night. I only see three beds, perhaps one bed was double occupancy.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Observation 483 on Train #26, the eastbound North Coast Limited (NCL), at Aurora, Illinois on July 10, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This may not appear to be a CB&Q owned car, but a better angle would show the initials CB&Q flanking the words "Northern Pacific" on the letterboard. The Burlington owned three sleepers, one observation lounge (this car), one dining car, and two coaches of the original 1948 NCL. There were a total of six observation lounge cars built by Pullman for the NCL, this one was named "Minneapolis Club". The car provided buffet lounge service and sleeping accommodations for ten passengers. By 1968, this train was combined with the Twin Cities Zephyr and Great Northern's Empire Builder, and the NCL observations were withdrawn from service between Chicago and the Twin Cities. Number 483 was returned to the Burlington, where it was repainted silver (Aluminum), BURLINGTON was applied to the letterboard, and it retained it's number, 483. It soldiered on a few more years in a variety of assignments until the BN merger.

Number 633 was built by Pullman in service date August 20, 1917 ( Lot 4515, Plan 2410F - 12 Section - 1 Drawing Room Sleeper ) named RIMERTON, painted PRR Red, rebuilt to Plan 4046 ( 12 Section - 2 Bedroom ) in service date June 22, 1936 and renamed PRINCETON UNIVERSITY, ice air conditioning added during rebuild, sold to the CB&Q December 31, 1948, assigned number 633, sold for scrap to National Iron and Metal Company (Denver) on April 9, 1968.

Number 634 was built by Pullman in service date August 31, 1917 as a 12-1 ( 12 Section, 1 Drawing Room, Lot 4515, Plan 2410F ) sleeper named SARVER painted PRR red, rebuilt June 23, 1936 to 12-2 Plan 4046 ( 12 Section - 2 Double bedroom ) renamed RUTGERS UNIVERSITY, ice air conditioning installed during rebuild, sold to CB&Q December 31, 1948, assigned number 625, later changed to 634, records indicate the name was changed to CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY on October 8, 1953, sold for scrap to Northwestern Steel and Wire in September 1964.
