| Description: |
A Conrail loco sits quietly on a siding waiting for Amtrak F40PH #340 to pass by with its passenger train before entering the mainline. Built by EMD in October of 1980, Amtrak F40PH #340 served well. It was eventually rebuilt into a non-powered control unit (NPCU) for "push-pull" train service, allowing trains to be controlled from either end without turning the locomotive, with its engine compartment converted into a baggage area, earning them the railfan nickname "cabbage cars". These units enable efficient operations on short-haul routes by eliminating the need for locomotive repositioning at terminals, using a control cab to operate the main locomotive pushing or pulling the train. No photographer was listed for the color print which is now in my rr collection. |
