Description:  The last obstacle to be overcome before attaining the summit of the Berkshires for the Western RR was the big cut in Washington which marked the end of the climb for westbound trains like the extra 2006 seen here. This is origional construction dating from 1841.

Title:  Helpers
Description:  Washington Hill in western Mass was a manned helper district in the mid 80s. A helper set has passed under the local road that passes over the crest and is headed toward Westfield. The GP 38 was an outlier here. The Albany Division, and the Boston Line especially, was almost all GE's in this region. Selkirk was the major maintenance base for GE's on the Conrail system.
