| Description: |
Chicago & North Western (C&NW) SD45 #954 was part of a fleet of 3,600-horsepower, 20-cylinder diesel locomotives built by EMD that served primarily in heavy freight service. Notably, the C&NW SD45 fleet, including units like 954, were distinct for being ordered without dynamic brakes. It was built by EMD in February of 1969 and powered by a massive 20-cylinder EMD 645E3 engine generating 3,600 horsepower. CNW 954 was officially retired from the roster in October 1996, making it the last original CNW SD45 to be retired. Following retirement, the unit was stored in a "deadline" at Marshalltown, Iowa, where it was documented as late as 1999 before being scrapped or sold for parts. No photographer was listed for the photo which is now in my rr collection. |
